Envisioning a Community-Based Wedding

Tuesday, 20 May 2014

When planning our wedding, Darren and I envisioned a community-based wedding.  What that meant to us was having our family, friends, and community involved as much as possible.  We think it took all of the places we've been and the experiences we've had, from the beginning of our lives to everything that happened in the last year, to get us here.

The YWCA has played a significant role in my life over the last 5 years: first as a counselling intern and then as a volunteer.  Because of that, I wanted the YW to be part of our celebration and life moving forward.  I truly believe in the work that the YW continues to do as anti-violence advocates.  We need a world where we are empowering women and girls, and I'm glad to be contributing to an organization that does just that.

We came up with the idea of "drinks by donation" for our wedding in part to keep everyone accountable to their alcohol consumption, but then it really took off when we thought of the YWCA.  I was so impressed and touched when I saw the beautiful cards that the YW made up for us to put on each table advising our guests what programs and services they would be supporting through their generous contribution.

We liked the idea of totally flipping every wedding tradition there is out there!  We didn't like the aspect of spending so much money just for one day, so having part of that money go into a place like YW felt really amazing.

Our wedding became an amazing opportunity to give back to an organization that has supported me so much as a volunteer and is doing such great work in the community.

I would encourage all new brides-to-be to consider hosting a community-based wedding; share your special day with the YWCA Edmonton and make a difference as you make memories that will last a lifetime.

Include the YW in Your Special Day!

We know a lot goes into planning a wedding; the dress; the flowers; the guest list, but it is also a chance to gather with family and friends & celebrate love!

As you get prepared for your special day, consider the ways you can make it even more spcial.

  • Donations In Lieu Of Table Favours
  • Ask guests to give to YWCA in your honour rather than a registry
  • Set up a toonie bar and donate the money afterwards

It’s a unique and meaningful way to celebrate your special day!  Email Stephanie at donations@ywcaofedmonton.org for more details.
