GIRLSPACE - THE POWER OF BEING A GIRL

GirlSpace is an innovative new program piloted by the YWCA Edmonton and the Edmonton Public and Edmonton Catholic school boards.  GirlSpace is built around the philosophy that there are key skills that teen girls must develop in order to become empowered, assertive and strong young women.

The current GirlSpace program includes a weekend long retreat focused on inspiring and moving the girls to understand and cope with the pressures of being a teen in today’s society.

GirlSpace will help girls and young women to:

  • Discover and accept a realistic body image
  • Talk about sexual stereotyping and sexism
  • Develop a positive mind set and self-image
  • Create and nurture healthy friendships
  • Gain more independence through problem solving and responsible decision making
  • Become more assertive
  • Become leaders in both their own lives and in society
  • Understand sexuality and the choices inherent in it
  • Develop responsible decision making with respect to alcohol, drugs, and sex
  • Cope with violence, discrimination and bullying
  • Learn how to get help and to locate resources

Currently, GirlSpace is only available for participation by referral in our pilot schools.  With success and support we hope to grow this program so all girls in Edmonton are able to experience the Power of Being a Girl.
