Shoppers Drug Mart steps up to help women experiencing domestic abuse

Tuesday, 15 March 2016

The YWCA Edmonton and the YWCA of Calgary are proud to announce Shoppers Drug Mart as the presenting sponsor for both organizations’ annual WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® fundraising events.

YWCA WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® are fun, light-hearted events where men don high heels for a short walk to shed light on the very serious issue of domestic abuse and raise funds for the YWCAs’ local prevention programs.

“The initiative to sponsor not one but two events in Alberta is significant, especially given the challenging economy.” says Jackie Foord, YWCA Edmonton CEO. “With their strong focus on women’s health, Shoppers Drug Mart is a natural fit as our partner as together we work to support women when and where they need us most.”

Shoppers Drug Mart participated as the presenting sponsor for the first time last fall for YWCA Edmonton’s WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® fundraiser. More than 35 men from several Edmonton Shoppers Drug Mart locations stepped up, raising $18,000 in pledges in addition to the sponsorship amount.

“Shoppers Drug Mart is a proud supporter of Women’s health and we are thrilled to be the presenting sponsor this year,” said Todd Small, Vice President of Operations Alberta. “Over the past five years, Shoppers Drug Mart has put women’s health first by contributing more than $57 million on behalf of its customers, Associate-owners and their store teams to local, regional and national women’s health initiatives.”

“Having Shoppers Drug Mart as our presenting sponsor this year is very exciting,” says Sue Tomney, Chief Executive Officer, YWCA of Calgary. “The demand for programs and services that support women experiencing domestic violence and help to end the cycle of abuse continues and often increases during challenging economic times.”

The YWCA of Calgary and YWCA Edmonton WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® events are scheduled for Tuesday, September 20, 2016 and Wednesday, September 21, 2016 respectively. Other levels of sponsorship are available for both events. For more information, contact Deborah McKinnon at or Bre Pathuis at
