Every year, people around the world observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which run from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) through December 10 (World Human Rights Day). In Canada, we also observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action Against Violence Against Women, in honour of the women who died in the horrific mass shooting at Polytechnique Montréal on December 6, 1989. Programs and Services
Y-Space is a YWCA Edmonton pilot program. Y-Space, like GirlSpace, is a youth-led initiative. The distinction is that the content has been adapted to be gender-inclusive and neutral; workshops are provided to all youth at the same time, regardless of gender. Y-Space addresses key social issues facing youth in an inclusive manner.
GirlSpace: Taking Back Girl Talk
Unique from their male counterparts, girls face high rates of sexual violence and a significant decline in mental health as they enter adolescence and young adulthood. GirlSpaceZ is a virtual after-school program using the Zoom app. It is a safe space that welcomes and supports the many different experiences of being a girl.

“I always thought I was the only girl who felt she wasn’t good enough, smart enough, pretty enough. Now, I know that I am enough, and I can be anything I want to be. But the best part of GirlSpace? I met my best friend. We go through the hard times together now.”
